Bali Travel Guide: Where To Start?

The Yoga Barn

This magical trip to Ubud, Bali took place on my much needed spring break vacation with my girl Alison. Coming off of a stressful semester I knew I needed a calming yoga retreat to get away from the city and help me to unwind. I discovered The Yoga Barn a couple years back when I was researching places abroad for yoga teacher certification courses. Later that same year one of my friends solo traveled to Bali and stayed at The Yoga Barn. She couldn’t say enough great things and highly recommended it! I knew I would be going on a spiritual journey to The Yoga Barn one day, but was waiting for my time.

When To Travel

My spring break, March, seamed like the perfect opportunity to travel to Bali, but I would most definitely recommend going for longer than a week. Travel time is about 24hrs plus and one week flew by with the long travel days needed! March is technically the end of their rainy season so traveling during April could have more consistent weather. If you decide to traveling during March I would recommend packing light clothing, athletic wear (for classes), swimwear, and rain gear.

Vaccinations

Before I took off for my trip I decided that it would be smart to get vaccinated in order to keep myself and others safe. I went to Peachtree Travel Clinic, in Atlanta, for vaccinations, mosquito repellent (because who wants dengue fever), nausea medicine (to avoid Bali belly), and sleeping pills for the plane ride (because it’s a long ass flight ok) totaling out to about $300 dollars all together.

Flights/Transportation/Dorm

I booked my flight to Bali with Qatar Airways costing around $1380. However, I did see flights as low as $800 in previous months before booking. The Yoga Barn website had a lot of detailed information on what to do specifically after leaving the airport, which helped us out immensely. We landed in the late evening in Bali and knew we needed to get out of the airport to locate a taxi booth for a ride to The Yoga Barn. The website did mention the taxi should be no more than $25 USD and to check with the driver before taking off to confirm it is a fair price.

Once we arrived at the barn we were brought to our women’s dorm shared bunk room, $30 USD nightly, where we met our two Australian roommates we would be staying with while unpacking and unwinding for an early night. If you are not interested in dorm style rooms there are private rooms available there starting at $60 USD and up.

Garden Kafe

The next morning we got up around 7am to start the day. We headed down to The Yoga Barn’s Garden Kafe for our first of many amazing breakfasts. If you know me you know I love to eat and this open air cafe had some of the most delicious and healthy vegan options I have ever tasted! Amazing way to help nourish your body before and after yoga classes.

After breakfast we decided to grab a fresh pressed juice and explore the barn. After exploring we signed up for yoga classes and spa services for the week. Having a mixture of relaxing days at the barn for meditation was important for us along with adventure days outside in the city.

Yoga Class Pass

With over 15 classes a day to choose from some of my favorites included Active Conscious Meditation and Sound Healing with Punnu Wasu. Punnu’s classes were unlike any yoga class I have ever taken in the states. They stretched my mind and body in a way I have never experienced before and challenged me to dig deep. The experience alone from these classes are priceless in my opinion, but the total price to take six classes all week was only $35 USD. You can’t even take yoga classes in the states for these prices!

Tour Guide Info: Ubud_bali_holiday

After all of the healthy food and relaxing yoga classes we decided we needed to find a legit Bali travel guide to help us explore Ubud outside of the barn. The Yoga Barn was able to recommend us a young driver, named Made, that use to work with them in the past. He decided to break away and start up his own tourism company called Ubud_bali_holiday. Made was the sweetest always arriving with bottles of water and flowers for our hair to start our adventure days. He was so knowledgeable about places to go and full of information on the history and culture of Ubud. His pricing was a split fee of around $80 USD a day for a full day of driving.

Culture

I did a lot of research on places I wanted to visit in Ubud and Made helped with recommendations as well. My list was long, but I knew seeing a temple or two needed to be at the top. I wanted to see the temple to get a true feeling of The Balinese culture. Balinese people have a lot of Hindu influences in their culture and the center of their lives revolve around religious ceremonies, offerings, and temple visits. It was very refreshing to see a community of people so unified through their religious values.

Lempuyang Temple (Gates of Heaven)

One afternoon leaving the Lempuyang Temple, Made arranged for a quick Vespa ride down the mountain coming back to avoid a big storm blowing in! Talk about adventure mode! I will say it was slightly difficult to get up the mountain compared to coming down. We ran into a bit of sticky situation when a young boy asked to join our walk to Lempuyang temple while Made parked the vehicle.

When we got to the top of the mountain by the temple gates the young boy demanded money from us as he felt he was providing us with a service. We weren’t very happy about this considering he asked to join our walk and his direction wasn’t needed. To be nice we offered him a little money, but he was demanding about $20 USD. Obviously I can appreciate the hustle to make money, but we weren’t cool with this price and told him no, but his child like behavior drew in a couple local adults who took his side and decided to speak on his behalf.

It was a very bazar situation and I just politely said I did not have the money and to please take what I offered or take nothing at all. It eventually blew over and we left to enter the temple. We told Made when he later arrived what happened and he spoke with the young boy to make it right. I am only telling you this story as it might be something to look out for on your future trip.

Beach Day

Kemenuh Butterfly Park

The last days at The Yoga Barn were spent in meditation, yoga class, and the spa to wind down. We had various spa treatments including hot stone massage, reflexology, hair treatments, and facials. Ending the trip with some self care days made all the difference in our energy levels traveling back to the states. Made was kind enough to take us to one last seafood dinner on the beach and then the airport. Overall this trip totaled out to about $2000 USD more or less, but worth every penny in my opinion.

Between Made’s genuine hospitality, experiencing the amazingly rich culture, nourishing food, and spirituality of Ubud I would say this combo put me on my Bali bliss and that feeling my friends is priceless! This trip ranks high on my list with my birthday Tulum trip for wellness travel. I hope you guys enjoyed this blog and please comment bellow with any questions! xoxo
