Detroit Travel Diary – Movement Music Festival

Detroit knows how to throw a festival, and the Movement Music Festival is the perfect blend of music, art, and style. Whether you’re heading there for the techno beats or to soak in the city’s urban grit, Movement is the place to flex your personal style. For me, I found myself not just indulging in the festival’s beats, but also using the city’s streets as a runway for my signature blend of tomboy femme fashion. It was all about mixing edgy oversized pieces with luxe, feminine details. Along the way, I also discovered some of Detroit’s coolest food spots – including one I couldn’t resist revisiting.

Let’s dive into the outfits, food recommendations, and some insider notes from my trip to Detroit.

Outfit Vibes – Tomboy Femme Street Style, Every Day

One thing I love about festivals like Movement is that no one bats an eye at bold style choices. It’s a judgment-free zone where you can truly experiment with your wardrobe. For this trip, I leaned heavily into my edgy tomboy femme aesthetic, balancing oversized, masculine cuts with luxe, feminine touches.

Day 1 – Sexy Mesh Alo Cargo Pants

For the first day, it was all about practicality. I knew I’d be walking and dancing a lot in the heat, so I kept it laid-back but stylish. The base of the outfit was Alo mesh black cargo pants and a black ribbed crop top. I added in my chunky platform Air Jordan 1 Brooklyn boots. To add a little femininity, I paired them with chunky silver necklaces, silver hoop earrings, and my Tom Ford sunglasses for that techno vibe. Pro tip: always go for comfy footwear on festival days – you’ll thank me later.

Day 2 – Sporty Detroit Street Style

Detroit Movement Music Festival Crew Day 2

On Day 2, I stepped it up with a sporty twist. Pairing my Rhude logo shorts with a black mesh knit top and black bandanna. I knew this day had the potential for a temperature drop and rain. I brought my Culture Kings Detroit Pistons hoodie. Throwing it on truly made the whole look pop. It’s all about mixing textures for that tomboy femme vibe – combining soft and hard elements. This fit was a balance between rugged streetwear and refined details. Silver jewelry and sunglasses added the perfect touch. It was perfect for blending into the festival’s gritty yet stylish crowd.

Day 3 – Comfy but Cool

The vibe on Day 3 was all about comfort with a hint of edge. I went for an oversized Nike black reversible bomber paired with a Wasted Heroes graphic t-shirt, and relaxed-fit cargo pants. The key to making a basic combo feel fashion-forward is in the details – a sleek pair of platform converse and a statement Detroit hat from Culture Kings took the look from everyday casual to festival-ready. And of course, an essential accessory: my mini crossbody bag, blending functionality and style for a busy festival day.

Food & Drink – Detroit’s Best Bites

Besides the killer music and fashion, Detroit’s food scene was something I couldn’t miss. From quick pizza stops to sophisticated cocktails, here are the spots that made my trip extra tasty.

Grandma Bob’s Pizza – So Good We Went Back!

If you’re in Detroit and craving pizza, you have to check out Grandma Bob’s. We loved it so much, we went back multiple times. Their Detroit-style pizza is crispy, cheesy perfection, with a thick crust that has just the right amount of char. My go-to? The one topped with spicy pepperoni and banana peppers. It’s perfect for a quick, casual bite, whether you’re fueling up before heading to the festival or winding down afterward. Grandma Bob’s is the kind of place where you feel the local love in every slice.

ZuZu – Cocktails Done Right

For something more upscale, ZuZu in downtown Detroit is where you want to be. This modern sushi and cocktail spot offers not only great food but also an amazing drink menu. I went for the yuzu margarita, which was both refreshing and full of flavor. If you’re looking to pair your drinks with a sushi roll or two, ZuZu offers a chic vibe. It is not overly pretentious. It is just what you need after a long festival day.

Sexy Steak – Dinner with a View

Sexy Steak is where we headed for a solid dinner, and the vibe didn’t disappoint. It’s got that upscale, polished feel, perfect for winding down after a day filled with festival madness. The food was on point especially the chimichurri oysters – steaks cooked to perfection, with a side of that Detroit charm. If you’re looking to treat yourself to a more refined meal while in town, Sexy Steak is the spot to hit.

Bad Luck Bar – Craft Cocktails That Wow

If you’re into unique, hand-crafted cocktails, you NEED to check out Bad Luck Bar. It’s a hidden gem with dim lighting, a moody vibe, and cocktails that are more like works of art. Each drink was meticulously crafted, with unique flavor profiles that you don’t find just anywhere. It’s a bit of a splurge, but definitely worth it for a night out if you’re a cocktail enthusiast.

Townhouse – Brunch with a DJ, But Understaffed

For brunch, we hit up Townhouse, which came highly recommended. The place had a live DJ spinning tunes, which set the perfect vibe for a fun start to the day. The atmosphere was beautiful, and the food was solid, but they were seriously understaffed. Service was slow, and it kind of killed the mood a bit. Still, if you’re looking for a lively brunch scene in Detroit, Townhouse is worth checking out – just be prepared for possible delays.

Packing Tips – Be Prepared for Anything

If you’re heading to Movement or planning any festival trip, here are a few style tips to keep in mind:

1. Layers are your friend: Detroit weather can be unpredictable, so having a raincoat, hats, or oversize hoodies on hand is a good idea.

2. Balance your look: Mix those oversize tomboy pieces with something fitted or feminine to keep the look interesting.

3. Comfy shoes are a must: Festivals mean standing, walking, and dancing for hours. Platform sneaker boots are a great way to stay stylish without sacrificing comfort. Check out my newest pair of Air Jordan 1 Brooklyn boots here!

4. Stay practical: Crossbody bags are ideal for festivals or something small. You need your hands free to dance, hold drinks, and snap pics, so go for something lightweight but functional.

Signing Out Until Next Time

Whether you’re drawn to the techno beats or just want to explore the city’s artsy, gritty vibe, it’s the perfect spot to push your style boundaries while discovering some of the best eats in the Midwest.
