Dear Tulum,
First of all, I just want to say how incredibly grateful I am to have experienced your breathtaking beaches, your rich Mayan culture, and your delicious food. Celebrating my 29th birthday with friends and family in this magical place was everything I could’ve asked for. But more than that, this trip held even more meaning. It was taken in honor of my Poppi, who passed away in 2018. His love for travel and his Mexican roots inspired me to explore Tulum, making it the perfect destination for this deeply meaningful adventure.
Tulum Travel Guide: What to Expect
If you’re wondering what makes Tulum so special, here’s the lowdown on what you can expect when you visit this paradise in Mexico:
Best Time to Travel to Tulum
The peak season in Tulum runs from December to April, as this is the dry season, making it the perfect time for sunshine-filled beach days. We traveled in mid-November, and the weather was perfect—not too hot, with temperatures averaging around 80°F (30°C). If you’re looking for a quieter time to visit, November to early December is ideal as it’s just before the crowds arrive.
Pro Tip: Traveling to Tulum in the off-season (May to October) means you’ll get better deals, but do be prepared for higher humidity and the possibility of rain.
How to Get Around in Tulum
Once you land at Cancún Airport, there are plenty of taxis waiting to whisk you away to your Tulum destination (about 1.5-2 hours from the airport). If you’re looking to explore the area on your own, renting a car is a great option as it can save you money on taxis and bike rentals. The public transportation in Tulum is pretty limited, so taxis or renting a car will be your best bet.
Pro Tip: Always confirm the taxi price before hopping in to avoid any confusion later on!
Climate in Tulum
Tulum has a tropical climate with an average temperature of 80°F (30°C) year-round. Expect sunny, beautiful days, but it can get humid. The best part? The beaches are pristine, the air is fresh, and the constant sea breeze makes everything feel like a dream.
Language in Tulum
Spanish is the primary language in Tulum, but no worries—many people working in tourism are fluent in English. I did my best with my high school Spanish (which is, let’s say, a work in progress), but luckily I had my primas to help with translations when needed!
Currency in Tulum
The Mexican Peso (MXN) is the local currency, but many places in Tulum also accept USD. I recommend getting pesos ahead of time or at a local ATM to avoid any extra fees. Just a heads up, AMEX is not widely accepted, so stick with Visa or Mastercard when paying for bigger purchases.
Where to Stay in Tulum: Our Beachfront Getaway
When it came to choosing where to stay, it was important for us to find a place that offered relaxation, privacy, and easy access to the beach. We stayed at Villa Pescadores, a beautiful hotel and beach club directly on the water. It was the perfect spot for our group—away from the hustle and bustle, yet close enough to explore the town when we wanted to.
The Villa Pescadores experience was amazing with spectacular views, delicious food, and outstanding hospitality. For 5 nights and 6 days, we paid about $2600 total, split between 5 people, which came out to about $520 per person. Totally worth it!
